Pro-active Network Management
Opportunity area: Orchestration
Helps cities anticipate how traffic in the network will evolve, both if nothing changes and when traffic management measures are used to soften expected disruptions. First pilot in Groningen, with Technolution’s MobiMaestro and Goudappel’s predictive model.
What problem are we trying to solve?
Traffic management across a whole network is not yet as pro-active as it can be at a single junction. This is where we want to make progress.
01
Things turn out differently than planned
A vibrant city is hard to predict. No two days are alike, and although they share common traits, it’s the important parts that differ.
02
Prediction is hard
It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future. But predictions do not have to be fully accurate to be of value.
03
We have to start somewhere
We start by adding real-time forecasts to the network management system, so operators can calculate and compare what-if scenarios.
How does it work?
Predicted data in the system
Measured data is completed with estimates for unmeasured parts of the network and predictions for the future.
Scenarios prepared in advance
Before planned roadworks, scenarios are prepared from estimates and expert judgement. When work is about to start, operators re-check them with current data.
Choose the best scenario
The road operator then chooses the scenario that best matches the current circumstances.
How is it being tested?
Pilot in Corpus den Hoorn, Groningen, around the Martini Hospital, from April 2026 to mid-2027.
How does it fit into DMI?
CITY
Cities become more resilient to disturbances
APPLICATIONS
Network Management Traffic Prediction
VISUALISATION
Digital (future) twins
PLATFORM
Technolution’s MobiMaestro network management system and Goudappel’s MVVS
DATA
Traffic light logs, national road sensors (NDW) and new cyclist counts
A method other cities can reuse to better deal with foreseen and unforeseen disturbances in the network.
