Smart Urban Traffic Zones
Opportunity area: Curb space
Helps cities manage how public space is used, by whom and when. It connects digital zones, real-time monitoring and operational measures to balance accessibility, safety and space for public life.
What problem are we trying to solve?
The same street serves different needs throughout the day: deliveries, access to homes, walking, cycling and meeting. Fixed arrangements do not always match these changing demands.
01
Competing uses of limited space
Deliveries, parking and through traffic compete with people who live, walk and spend time in the area.
02
Rules and actual use are disconnected
Cities define access conditions and operating hours, but often lack insight into how space is actually used.
03
Limited ability to adapt
Responding to changing demand requires coordination between systems, service providers and municipal teams.
How does it work?
Define zones and conditions
Represent areas digitally, with rules specifying permitted activities, user groups and operating times.
Monitor actual use
Connect sensor data to these zones to understand occupancy, duration of stay and traffic conditions.
Coordinate operational measures
Brings zones, monitoring, enforcement and scenario-based measures together in MobiMaestro, so cities can adjust access, communicate conditions and target checks.
How is it being tested?
Smart loading bays are the first practical application, with a planned one-year pilot in Amsterdam’s Oude Pijp starting in January 2027.
TEST 1 · THE OUDE PIJP
Understand loading-bay use
Monitoring 142 loading bays provides insight into occupancy, duration of stay and daily patterns.
TEST 2 · DAILY OPERATIONS
Support daily management
Live data on each bay helps the city spot misuse, target checks and keep bays free for deliveries.
NEXT
The application extends to neighbourhood access, time-based permissions and shared use of street space, such as deliveries at one time of day and other activities at another. The data also shows where loading bays should go in future.
How does it fit into DMI?
CITY
Deliveries that don’t block streets and cycle lanes
APPLICATIONS
Smart Loading Bays
VISUALISATION
Live dashboard of bay use and length of stay
PLATFORM
Bays recorded as digital zones in MobiMaestro, Amsterdam’s traffic management system
DATA
Underground sensors in each loading bay
A shared digital foundation connects policy, monitoring and daily operations, helping cities manage public space dynamically while protecting accessibility and quality of life.
